Linux

Hi,

I'm looking to install linux on one of my machines (jus a fun thing). Now, I was exploring the idea of building linux from scratch (www.linuxfromscratch.org). I have little experience with linux and I dunno if this is really a good idea. I was reading through the book and it wuz a bit over the top for me. However, the idea of it sounds pretty whack though. Has anyone done it? How easy is it?

My next question 'bout linux is to do with modems. I've installed and uninstalled linux numerous times before. The reason i end up uninstalling it is not so much cuz i dun like linux, its too boring, etc. Its really to do with the fact that I can't seem to use the internet!!!! (cuz most modems are winmodems). Also, I dunno how to hook it up to my existing LAN (which consists of only WinXP based machines 🙂). This time, I'd like some advice on how I'd go about solving this modem problem. Surely, I'm not the only one on this....there are lots of Linux users out there that are happily surfing the net. One solution is to go purchase a hardware modem....but I'd rather not do that (cuz hardware modems are expensive and hard to find). That would be last resort.

Finally, I'd like a recommemdation for a Linux distribution to install (if i choose the pre-packaged way). I currently have RedHat 8.0 and 7.3 sitting here. I'll prolly get 9.0 off the net soon. Are there any distributions that are better (in terms of user-friendliness, cool apps, GUI, etc)?

Thanks

Use Red Hat Linux 9.0 distribution, I think most newbie use this distro cuz it is the most 'common' one which you can find that most of the free softwares support Linux 9.0 ( i386).

I suggest you to use dual boot which mean you should install windows xp and linux both on the same harddrive, choose a preferred size to divide the partition, for example, if you just wanna play around w/ linux and you have a harddrive like 50GB, leave 10 GB for the linux installation (10GB should be enough to store your work and the GUI such as KDE, Gnome installation) so you can use the rest of the partition for the windows xp usage.

I am not sure if this is a good ideals for you, but i think you should try this first.

You definitely don't sound ready for Linux From Scratch. Mandrake is a favorite for noobs (like me). Knoppix and Morphix are also fun distros to try. You download the image file (.iso) and burn it to CD, then boot from the CD. Nothing to install to harddrive if you just want to play around. Let google find it for you.

Lots more Linux discussion over in the operating systems forum!
