Linux VPN Server, with Windows XP clients help

I need to set up a VPN server on a Linux computer (most likely running either gentoo or slackware), and I need help setting up a vpn. What would be the best protocol so that Windows XP can easily connect to it, IPSec, or pptp, or something else? I have tried to set up FreeS/WAN (IPSec) and I failed miserably. I am using a vanilla 2.4.20 kernel, patched by the FreeS/WAN install. If anyone can give me a good online HOWTO, tutorial, or even example configs, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

MODS, can you please delete this thread? I think I might get a better response from Networking, so I'm going to re post this there.
