I'm trying to decide whether I'm going to just format and install Mandrake 7.2 directly or if I'm going to install windows 2000 and use either VMware or lnx4win... do any of you know which of these 2 would be faster? What I might do is use one of these to make sure that I can get Quake2 and Halflife working in linux... then I would format and install pure linux... I've just never had the patience to install linux and sit there and try to get things working the hard way. 😉
 
I would definitly make the final solution a stand-alone linux install. You will probably notice a performance difference running it via Lnx4win. However, I don't think it is such a bad idea necesarily to set it up that way just to see how it reacts to your hardware and stuff.
 
Yeah I wanna try one of these ways first to find out how everything reacts and to make sure my games would work... I figure once I get them setup and running the first time the 2nd time around will be a lot easier. 🙂
Also if they (the games) don't want to cooperate atleast one of these ways... or possibly just dual booting linux/windows.. will let me reboot and play the game with no problem... nice stress reliever 😉
 
I've never tried lnx4win, but I have tried VMware 2.03 under Windows 2000. I had no problems installing RedHat 7.0. It is noticeably slower however than using a real linux setup.

If you want to test if the system will work for linux, then I'd say give it a shot. But if it fails, you can't necessarily say that "linux won't work on my machine", as it is entirely possible that VMware could cause problems for you.

The easiest thing to do would be to get a small 2-4GB hardrive and make that your master drive and install linux. If you don't like it, you haven't lost anything.

[edit]One more thing, under VMware you won't have complete native support for 3D applications. So your idea of testing games may be moot with VMware.[/edit]
 
A STRONG disadvantage of having linux and windows share a partition is that if windows crashes and you need to re-install, you gotta re-install linux as well.

Though i've never used it, many people have told me that phatlinux is the way to go if you want to run it under windoze.
 
I've decided to dual boot windows 2000 & mandrake 7.2.. just have to redownload the ext ISO for mandrake since the 1st time didnt burn right 🙁

DONT use phatlinux or winlinux or linux4win. Those are the kiddiest of versions.

Also you want your data and os' safe use seperate partitions I ALWAYS suggest a seperate HD if posible.

Its better to run quake in linux rather then via vmware or one of those kiddie cup win/lin distros.
