linux usb -> ethernet support

I see a couple usb ethernet adapters at TigerDirect that look ok, and they're cheap.

I'm going to buy two, so i'd like to know if they work with linux before I get them. I read somewhere that if it's a 10/100 usb adapter, it will probably work because there's only one usb chipset that does 10/100 and it is supported. Is that true?

These are the USB ethernet options I have in 2.4.17 kernel config, see if you can find out what chipset the adapters you're looking at use. Or you could try searching on www.google.com/linux for the model number to see if anyone else has had success/failures with them.

USB KLSI KL5USB101-based ethernet device support
USB CATC NetMate-based Ethernet device support

Thanks for your help. The 3com card is listed under "pegasus" at a turbolinux site, so i'll assume it's compatible. I can't find anything about the other one.

If you have space in the machine why not pickup a cheap pci nic? Linksys nics are $10-20USD and are very well supported by most OSes.

my local wal mart always has a good deal on linksys nics, a nic + 7foot cat5 for like 18 bucks. thats a pretty good deal considering that walmart way overprices the rest of their computer stuff (cdr's and mice, keyboards, speakers, etc.)

generally i would not suggest walmart for computer accessories but for a nic thats not bad

are you on a laptop or something?

I would except that i'm putting them on a compaq ia-1 internet appliance which has no slots whatsoever.
