Linux touchscreen MP3 jukebox

I want to create an mp3 jukebox interfaced with a touchscreen LCD
I am thinking linux, as i think i can trim it enough to have 10 or 15 second boot times.
(i have a linux mame cabinet and it boots in like 10-15 seconds)

Basically, i want to put this in my bathroom and mount it on the wall. I obviously don't want to keep it on 24/7, so fast boot times, and ease of use (for the wife) is very important.

if anyone can steer me in the right direction , i would appreciate it!

sounds like a fun project... sorry I can't help but I'll be watching to see what comes! I want to see pics of what happens!

hmm, a pictorial. good idea.
i'm pretty interested in how this is going to pan out myself ;-)
hopefully someone will have a good direction to point me in

a very raw windowsxp installation could work as well

select somewhere fast bootup
disable all services you dont need

and yes.. picies when you start 🙂

the most trimmed down XP install i can get is still no match for my linux MAME machine.
xp would probably be easier, but i really want speed and stability

How come even with a trummed down install you can only get linux to boot in 10 seconds? What about something like Tivo, doesn't that boot up almost instantly? Doesn't it have linux?

not really. if you ever unplug a tivo, and do a cold restart, it takes like 2 to 5 minutes to completely boot up
when i say 10 seconds, that includes post, which is 2-4 seconds

I'm hooking up music in my bathroom. What's better than listening to classical music while laying in the jacuzzi?

exactly.
i can't seem to find a zoned audio solution that meets my wants, so i am trying for a self built system

just import all songs into a media library of a good media player for linux
another idea: write them into a simple HTML page so you can make the buttons to start a song more touch friendly

another thing to think about is moisture - how it will affect the screen and other components

any suggestions of a good linux media player? I am not a major linux head :-(

moisture...well i guess we'll all find out about that one 😉

I would think that the search should start with trying to find a suitable touchscreen that has good linux support. It would seem that that is the most technically difficult part so your os choice might depend on what you can get working with the hardware.
