Linux to Windows networking

Alright, I know about samba, but I am hoping there is an easier method. heres the deal. I have a laptop with redhat 7.1 and my desktop runs win2kpro. I am planning on taking my laptop to school (to download stuff off their fat T1) and bring it back to my apartment, and hopefully transfer to my desktop.
what would the best method be for transferring files between them?

what I had in mind was this: Use the routing service on win2k box to let laptop access internet (that is another goal) at my apartment, is this possible? if so, can I just set up an ftp server on my laptop (or vice versa) and simply download from it like any other server (using whatever IP I use while routing)?

thanks for any help

The most convenient method for transferring files between Linux and Windows is probably Samba. You can just mount the Linux share(s) like any other Windows share and copy files to/from your laptop that way. Samba takes a little bit of configuring but imo it's well worth getting it set up.

Your other easy option is just run the ftpd on your Linux laptop when you're at home and transfer the files via FTP. It'll be faster than Samba probably and again, very easy to use. You'd just need to set up an internal network at your apartment through a switch or hub and make sure the two machines have internal IPs set up (either alias your NICs or put in a 2nd NIC into your win2k box).
