Linux system hangs at "testing the IP APIC....."

I just installed RedHat 7.2 on a Dual AMD XP 1800 system with ASUS mobo. I boot up in SMP mode and all is well until the line "testing the IP APIC........." it just hangs there and stops. I boot up in none smp-mode and everything works fine.
Any suggestions?

yea, try compiling a new kernel... its easy

dunno what ip apic is either... sure it didn't say io apic?

at any rate, sounds like the kernel has something in it that doesn't like (or is not compatible) with your system...

I think you mean IO APIC, try booting with 'kernelname noapic'

See if you have a BIOS update for your system, AMD SMP systems are very new and still have some strange problems.

Yes, my bad, it was IO APIC...
At any rate, I am quite new to Linux, Dual booting in linux at least...
So you would recommend getting BIOS updates and afterwards recompiling the kernel?
And the 'kernelname noapic', where would I use that specifically?
Thanx

You never said which distro or whether you're using lilo or grub, where to put kernel parameters differs between the two.
