It can be a pain to go through online documentation though...

I'm a newbie to Linux and found that going to the library or half-price books got me software and answers fast and cheap and offline.

BTW, the questions you asked are covered in the first chapter of these books, so it is really easy to find the info! My post on offline resources

Sure thing...

BTW, I'm new here, but I certainly hope this kind of behavior (I refer to monkey) isn't something I will continually encounter on these boards.

Sure, when learning a new system it is best to look at well-known sources first. But 1) I do not see a thread for resources for linux 2) if you're new how do you know what is a minor problem and what is a serious one? and 3) There are much politer ways to remind someone of where they can look for info then making comments about their posts.

I gotta stick up for n0c here.
he defininately knows his stuff, and has helped me on several occasions
the problem is the same questions keep getting asked over and over again, by people who won't spend 5 minutes looking for the answer themselves. Linux has a steep learnign curve, you can't expect a few questions on a forum to answer everything.
good luck, linux is worth it:D

i agree. n0c can be a bit harsh at times, but he has the right intentions. after reading your other thread i sort of lost sympathy for you. if you create 2 threads just to learn how to log in, then you definitely deserve to get what's coming to you. go read the getting started guide at linuxdoc.org or something, it'll help you much more than posting here will.

There are manpages, Linuxdoc.org and similar sites, and book, and still one has to come here to ask.

Not to mention that this has probabaly been asked a million times in a million places.

I agree, this is a stupid question.

Besides, if n0c didn't behave the way he does, he wouldn't really be an OpenBSD'ist, you hafta be hard core elitistic to be an OpenBSD fan afterall ;)

Would have been funny to see this posted on misc@openbsd.org though :D

i once posted to one of the mailing lists kinda by accident and got flamed by some VIP guys:) I still maintain that my problem is/was legit, but man those guys will jump down your throat fast sometimes. i thought i was just submitting a bug report to a few developers, i didnt realize i was publishing to a whole mailing list!

and in regards to the other posts... i can sympathize with wanting to learn it all inside and out RIGHT NOW, but there is no shortcut. you've got to read read read, take a break and then read some more. sometimes i think the 'learning curve' is more like a vertical cliff. sometimes i hate *bsd | linux but in the end i always come back cuz i'm a geek and i enjoy this self torture.

nuttervm: its called being eleet, a psychological disorder, maybe they weren't fed enough or they werent loved enough, but since they know diferential math and you are learning how to do algebra, they will resort to wastign keystrokes flaming you.

i help a lot, and no matter how SIMPLE the question is, i will not resort to telling the person to go read, thats his perogative, if i feel it sux then i wont reply.

just my 2 cents. i stick up for newbies and pros alike

yeah, it was kinda funny. after i replied to one guy basically saying he was an ass and that he wasn't helping me in the least and that he shouldn't have bothered replying, he became fairly helpful and cooperative. after that we exchanged a few emails. i still didnt get my problem fixed, but i did get a little respect. its like kicking someones ass the first day you're in jail, i showed him my unix kung fu and i got the 'spect i deserved. heh heh

Alright, Im an ass.

Get off my back. My other response was much nicer than this one (althoug still not nice). Newbies need to read. Plain and simple. I do not mind passing on some of my limited knowledge, but goddamn, why do I have to do it in such silly ways?

EDIT: Got rid of the number ;) for anyone that actually dialed it to see where it went :Q ;) :p :D

Entirely agree w/ n0c. This type of question is answered best and most EFFECTIVELY in a book or howto. Now lets not be a dick to the new user, lets HELP HIM HELP HIMSELF. Give him suggestions on good prerequisite reading material.

www.linuxdoc.org -howtos, and whatnots. pay close attention the the Linux System Administrators Guide, its a great primer.

oreilly books - aint cheap, but u can "browse" in the bookstore with a notepad :)

man pages - accessed thru man command, where command is the command u want to learn about (Q quits btw, newbie frequent mistake)

anyone else have something?

or pleace use the search feature on the forums. try searching for linux help or recommendations or something. try and see what others have ALREADY recommended. theres tons of good posts, get out and read.

Lilcam, in n0c's defense, it really is annoying to see people asking the same questions over and over, or asking questions that a Google search could answer faster than they typed the post here.

I agree that one could say it ni a more diplomatic way, but in the end, it all means the same thing either way, RTFM.
