Linux server

I have to set up a small LAN to connect 4 comps. One of them is a proxy server too. I don't want to spend on a Router at this time. I just have a HUB. All the client comps have windows on it. I know it's fairly easy to configure the server in WIN XP. But can i run a LINUX server to set up the LAN and proxy server? what version of Linux? and where Can i download that?

Or if you want a full desktop in linux as well, Mandrake Corp edition is very very easy to set up - all you really need to do to get NAT working is tell ipchains to start on boot.
