LINUX Red Hat 7.2 How to install Video drivers.

If you're looking for burning programs for Linux, you'll need to understand that only SCSI drives are supported. IDEs can work via SCSI-emulation. Most likely if you installed RedHat 7.2 and you had a burner in your system then, RH picked it up and already enabled SCSI-emulation in your kernel for you.

All burning programs (that I've seen) are based off of cdrecord and mkisofs; some standard Linux utils (don't worry you've got em).

Also to use most of them you'll need to run them as root(use the su command from an xterm).

That being said, Xcdroast is pretty easy to learn. But you'll want to experiment naturally as all intelligent people do 😀

So here's a link to a program for KDE: CDBake Oven it's hosted for download, with lots of other nice things, at apps.kde.com

Netopia-

My apologies for my assumptions. I have gotten in the habit of reading the Linux newbie posts with a Jaded Eye and that in itself was/is not right. As far as your contributions to AT you are correct in how these (all of the boards) have been built - withhelping hands.

I too spend much time reading. Often I will refrence something in multiple places in order to figure it out. Too often on the boards people are not willing to "look" for the information. People want someone to hand feed them or coddle them through a problem so that they can get out on the web or try to ''use" Linux as their OS. My feeling on this is that if they are presenting a problem that has/was covered in the forums then they need to learn how to use the search function(as you or I would search first before posting) and then they also need to use google.com/linux or check the NHFs too. All too often simple problems with Linux are posted because someone is too lazy(may not be the right word) or in too much of a rush to do it themselves and they want some to do the quick fix for them. Now for the person in a rush 1 is OK in my book but a habitual offender need to be told RTFM

i would like to add that with my current set up thought I did get everything working last night I had my IBM 60 Gig 75gxp HD go bad so I have to go through it once again. I have no real means of printing until I can get up and running. But I did just go to a great site and printed MMMM about 1000 pages of manuals. So I will be reading.

Yes I too am guilty of wanting it handed to me on a silver platter but I only want a few things to get me started. So I do apologize for not reading the F$$king manual. I do however fear asking questions about new things and answering questions because of the treatment I or other people get on these boards. I mean I have a slight proplem with really grasping some tech words and theirfor I can not possibly understand what it means so I come here and ask and get blasted.

I would love to sit down and see how well you can keep up with say the rules and regs of gas pipeing for homes and for businesses. Or say an easy one how much grade or fall must you have per foot of laying sewer and drain pipe. Or maby hot on the right and cold on the left.

My meaning is we all are good or great at things and then we all can suck at alot of other things. To grow is to ask and read and learn as much from our fellow people.

Oh well time to give it up.

BIGGDOG-

I am guilty of not reading also and I have been burned several times. I think that one thing I took away after asking a particularly stupid question that a search would have answered about 10 times over was that people do not mean to be vicious. They are responding to the same questions being overasked again and again. There should be no fear in asking questions here and the suggestion that I have for anyone posting here is to post indepth. Let us know what you have tried. When I see a very detailed post I can read to see what the person did to try to correct the problem and you can usually see what where when and how. This helps to form a method to help the person and a way to communicate(expectation of skill level). Some newbies post in such a manner that you have to ask if they have read the documentation, what did they try, what were the results. When I see the need to ask all the questions I will usually start with have you RTFM? (that is not really the right way to approach it I guess) and when they respond NO and how do I fix it anyway I have problems with that because the mentality there is to have someone else hand feed them.

I hope that you will continue work in Linux and to ask questions

BOL

I can understand and yes we should be a little bit more detailed as to what we have tried and hav'nt. The problem as I saw it was a two fold problem.
1: I did not use the search right IE "search for LINUX and XCONFIGURATOR or VIDEO"
2: I was very vaig in my description of what was the problem and what I was really looking for.

Yes I love LINUX as it is challenging me daily which is nice. I now have a reason to have a computer again. HA HA.
LINUX is already costing me as I have to buy a new HDD so I can keep it simple and maby buy a TRIOS "{I think that is what it is called" so I can try BeOS as well.

Any way yes I will keep posting and trying LINUX as I am hard headed and will not take no for an answer.

Thanks again.

<< Somebody needs a hug. >>

,

LOL... I don't think you'd feel that way if you knew BIGGDOG and I in RL.... together we tip the scales at somewhat above 600 pounds! Wouldn't want to squish anyone! 😀 BTW... TeamAnandTech in need of any linebackers? 😉

Ok this is where I stand.
I got the correct video drivers and got them up with alot of help from NETOPIA. Thanks". Then RIGHT after we got them working my IBM 75gxp 60 gig HDD dies. So I went out and bought another IBM 60 gig 60 gxp and reinstalled REDHET LINUX 7.2. Now just from going through the steps that we took yesterday I thought I could set everything up myself no help needed. Well I did and I want to thank all who have given their help, assistance and opinions in this matter. I do know that while installing REDHAT and configuring your NVIDIA drivers may be small to most it is an incredible HIGH for me since I have been spoiled with point and click.

WHEW. Now I'm bored just kidding.

Thanks again. This WILL NOT be the last time you here from me on LINUX.

Take care all.

Ever seen the movie "What about Bob?" If so remember the name of the book the doc wrote? Baby Steps. The little victories are the ones that keep you going. Dont let jaded pricks like myself keep you down 😛

Just an FYI

I got my printer working and I also have sound.

Now I need to find Wolf3D for LINUX and see how to get it running.

Hey all I just wanted to thank everyone once again.
I now have tackled
Printing
Video
Sound
and Wolfenstein 3D

Thanks for helping to get me motivated by reading manuals.
