Linux questions galore

Ok, I am finally going to set up a Linux machine, the question I have is a simple one.

Can anyone recomend any good resources for a linux newbie?

It seems to me that many people on some of the linux sites I have checked out are very rude to newbies. as if they were born with an extensive knowledge of the Linux OS.

Oh yeah, and for what it's worth I'll be running something with the KDE desktop, probably Mandrake. Unless of course, you all have a better suggestion.

IMO, Mandrake would be the #1 choice. Its easy enough to understand and setup if you are new, and has plenty oppertunity for the advanced user.

One of the best sources of info would be http://www.linuxdoc.org/, the linux documentation project. You can find all the FAQ's, HOWTO's and man pages there. And you are right, a lot of Linux die-hards often forget they too had to learn it once.
 
I disagree Afterburn. I tried Mandrake and went right back to the easiest distribution there is, Caldera eDesktop 2.4. It is by far the easiest install, even lets you play Pac-Man while the install is completing. Get Caldera! Trust me.
 
Mandrake 7.2 is nice for KDE2, but a few kde program that where on Mandrake7.1 are not ported yet for KDE2.... but since you are new to linux I say go with Mandrake7.2

I actually am using it only because of KDE2......
 
Rogue: I didnt say Mandrake was the easiest, i said it was easy enough. 🙂

That said, i havent used Caldera yet. I learned it on Slackware in a grey past, got lazy and switched to Red Hat, tried Debian, but that doesnt cut it for me, now happily running Mandrake, which is more feature rich than Red Hat. Not that im waiting for bloatware, but most of the additions of Mandrake over Red Hat, i was missing and had add myself. Like i said, i've grown more lazy over the years. Just want it to install and run, with minimal hassle.
 
Wow, Thanks a lot guys! I need all the info I can find. You see when I learn something I really like to "know" how to use it. So when I get this started I will likely be spending all my waking hours screwing around.

Linuxnewbie.org is the better of the two sites to go to. The NHF's (newbie help files) and the forums helped me learn how to do almost everything in Linux that I do in windows. Although now I took Linux off so that I can work more with win2k i will probably put it back on one i finish the rest of my mcse.
 
Mandrake is Red Hat based, but imo its a more coherant package with more effort put into it and its compiled with 586 optimizations, instead of 386 for RH. Therefor it will run faster on Pentium class machines and higher.
