Linux Question

Im completely new to linux, and i just installed Ubuntu. Right now i cant get a resolution above 1280x1024 and would like to be able to get to my monitors native resolution (1680x1050) so i downloaded the installer from ati, but the thing is Ubuntu recognises the file as a word document and tries to open it wiht a word processor. I would like to know how i go about opening the installer, keep in mind im completely new to the entire linux enviroment.

open a shell....also, I think if you enable universe and multiverse it's in the restricted modules package in apt

In the terminal and once you've navigated to the directory type "sudo sh <ati-installer-name>.run". You'll need the kernel headers along with compiling tools like gcc beforehand.

This should make it easy. Choose the Method in the TOC according to what you want to do (Method 1 = install older but included driver, Method 2 = install latest file from ATI.com).

So i followed teh instructions for option one, and after my reboot i now only get a black screen. Is there any way to revert to teh old driver to try again or do i have to reinstall?

I'm still pretty lost in this whole manual install business, from ati's site it sounds like it has a graphical installer. Am i understanding this correctly and does it work with ubuntu? A manual driver install seems to bee a little too much for me to do before im familiar with linux and all the commands it uses.
