Normally I'd agree with you, but I've seen some useful applications of it lately. Largely google video and some screencasts from linux developers. It may not be absolutely necessary, but it's better than something like news.com.com requiring you to either install a ram or wmv plugin.
The technology itself can be sound while the majority of uses is crap. For instance the cryptography hardware in TCPA has some cool uses, but since the main thing people think about is DRM the whole thing gets a bad rap. Same thing with NTFS, the filesystem itself isn't bad but since MS won't release any worthwhile docs to allow for interoperability it's a PITA.
