Is it worth putting Linux on an external hard drive or flash device? Thanks.

Knoppix would be just as good. Boot from the live cd, run X, mount local volumes to save data.

But knoppix is slow because it's run from CD, if the CF device was faster it might be worthwhile. But in general, knoppix is a better choice.
