Linux question--sound card setup

Hi. I'm running Mandrake 8.1 for the first time. Updated my old compaq from RedHat 7.1

Redhat never found my sound card, neither did Mandrake. In redhat I used sndconfig to get it in.

Mandrake says libraries are missing to run sndconfig. Is there a way to get it going w/o adding the
libraries or running sndconfig? I ran hardrake and it did not pick it up. My card is a soundblaster 16.

TIA

1. check if sndconfig is actually installed (use rpmdrake)
2. try uninstalling / re-installing the sndconfig RPM or source (a dependancy might be broken)
3. check to see if the sound card modules are installed

i run mandrake 8.1 with a soundblaster 32
good luck
