Linux processors... Intel or AMD?

I'm building a linux box, and I'm wondering what would be a better CPU for it. I'm leaning towards intel, but when I go to web pages to check out prices and stuff, it seems they try to advertise AMD more than Intel. Is there something wrong with intel CPU's? I know they're a little bit more expensive, but are they more stable and do they run cooler? Any comments?

My price range is the Pentium4 1 - 1.3 ghz

Price out all of your components, instead of just looking at the cpu. Remember, if you go P4, you'll be stuck with RDRAM, if that makes any difference to you. Also, kick around Anandtech and similar sites and check out the reviews on the cpus. In many apps, the Athlons beat out P4s running at higher speeds. There are alot of things to take into consideration. As far as linux itself, it could care less if your cpu is AMD or Intel.

Both AMD and Intel chips will work with linux equally well and I don't belive that there would be any difference in stability. If you're planning to run some really memory bandwidth-intensive stuff under linux (mmm, like video encoding or sth.), then P4 might be faster than Athlon. IMHO athlon suits more for linux cause it's price/performance is better and it's generally faster...

For the time being most stuff is only optimized for P-II class chips, so Athlons and P3's will probably be about the same.
