Im a first timer and im running Makdrake 8. I was using the KDE GUI and when i get in, as soon as i click on an icon, the system freezes. My linux swap partition is 100MB if that makes a difference. I dont know if this makes a difference but when i was installing it it selected GeForce 2, but i have a geforce 3 which wasnt listed. I dont know if that matters but anything is greatly appreciated

What happens when you don't use X? How much RAM do you have? Why are you using a Geforce3? The support from nVidia sucks... Why is your swap file only 100MB?

like i said. im a first timer. I dont even know what the hell a swap is. Partition magic just said to make one so i made it 100 mb. I dont know anything about "X" or linux so i dont know. i have 128 MB of ram. Im using a geforce 3 because im a gamer and im dualbooting with win98 so i can game.

have you tried nvidias website for geforce 3 drivers?

the swap file is about the same as in windows, its part of your HD that is used as temp memory storage when your ram fills up. most people make the swap file 2x their ram.

try mandrakeuser.org

wait I just did and here is what I found on the fron page, a link to here

<< Version: 1.0-1251 | Post Date: 5/17/2001

These XFree86 binary drivers provide optimized hardware acceleration of OpenGL applications via a direct-rendering X Server and support the TNT, TNT2, GeForce 256, GeForce2 GTS, GeForce2 MX, GeForce2 Pro, GeForce2 GTS, GeForce 2 Ultra, GeForce2 Go, GeForce3, Quadro, Quadro2 MXR, and Quadro2 Pro chipsets. AGP and flat panel displays are also supported.

The files below require a fair amount of steps to get them fully installed. You should refer to the README and Installation Guide for full installation instructions, as well as help with getting some common apps up and running. The files are available via HTTP or FTP.

I just upgreade XFREE but now im having trouble installing the nvidia drivers. And when it freezes everything stops responding.
All Icons make it freeze.
while trying to install the drivers by folling the instrustions on this site, i got an error while at the "make" step.
The eroor is as follows:
In file nv.c
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:1:2#error Modules should never use kernel-headers system headers
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:2:2:#error but headers from an appropriate kernel-source
make:*** [nv.o] error 1

Swap parition is for when you don't have enough memory and the system has to swap memory to disk. I believe Windows has something similar... Swap should be 1.5-2 * the amount of RAM. Unless you have some ungodly amount of RAM. ;) nVidia does not provide decent open sourced drivers. The community should not support them.

It would be much easier if you would take the advice you would get from a lot of people. RTFM. This is one thing that newbies seem to have a lot of problems with. They will read just enough to be able to ask a question but not enough to answer the question.

I asked a couple questions at the beginning to get a feel for how much you read about the system before, during, and after the installation and to gain a little more information on what was going on. You could provide little of the information I asked about using "like i said. im a first timer." as an excuse. You were also very abrasive when you said "I dont even know what the hell a swap is". You also showed no signs of any research when you said "Partition magic just said to make one so i made it 100 mb."

So with these responses in mind I figured since this was not worth you putting forth any goddamn effort why should I?

n0cmonkey: If you didnt want to put effort forth you shouldn't have posted at all.

I was installing the RPMs. The nvidia kernel went fine but then when i tryed to install the glx one it said something about mesa? I saw something about mesa in the nvidia driver manual but didnt know what it meant. Maybe one of you will understand this better.

I was trying to help at first, you would know this if you carefully read my response. If you didnt want to put forth the effort you should not have installed linux. I am printing off the nVidia information about the drivers now so I can read them.

Ok, I may be looking at older docs but according to this the kernel modules are for the 2.2 kernel. If you are using a 2.4 kernel they may not work. They also have an email address if you have problems. I just wanted to note this "Note: The drivers for Nvidia boards are not Free Software and are included in the retail packs only." Just find this humorous because this is the reason I say not to buy nVidia when installing Free OSes. Anyhow, do you have a 2.2 kernel on the machine?

heres a snippet from the linuxnewbie.org nvidia installation manual.

Hop back to the directory where you downloaded the NVIDIA_GLX driver to and follow these commands:

gunzip NVIDIA_GLX-0.9.tar.gz
tar -xvf NVIDIA_GLX-0.9.tar

Now, you should have a directory called NVIDIA_GLX-0.9

First, we need to rid ourselves of some Mesa items that will get in the way.

cd /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions
mv libGLcore.a libGLcore.a.mesa
mv libglx.a libglx.a.mesa
cd /usr/X11R6/lib
mv libGL.so libGL.so.mesa
mv libGL.so.1 libGL.so.1.mesa
mv libGL.so.1.0 libGL.so.1.0.mesa
mv libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1.2.mesa
mv libGL.so.1.2.0 libGL.so.1.2.0.mesa

Now we are going to actually install the GLX. Change to the NVIDIA_GLZ-0.9 directory. (Where ever it was that you put it.) Execute the following:

make

You should see no errors when the install is finished.

i read this and it might relate to what im talking about but i cant remove files like that is doing because im installing from an rpm.

That would make sense. Mesa is (was?) an opensource video type project (partially sponsored by SGI?). As you can see I dont know a whole lot about it. But try that. The document I pointed out is as far as I can tell the most recent and mentions Mesa. I recommend reading it. If it does not help with this it may help in the future (and you an be the asshole telling the newbie to read ;)). And while reading it if you have questions please ask. Or do a search. Documentation should be your best friend at this point :D

You could still try and move the files they mention and see if that helps. You did download the correct rpms right? The nVidia readme mentions this quite often so it may be worth your time to make sure.

Try not to remove, just move them, like the instructions say. If you remove them it may be a pain getting them back ;)
