Linux partitioning help. Just want to know which partition i need for future upgrades

If I want to upgrade to a newer version of linux in the future, which partitions does it change? I heard someone say /home, but just want to make sure.
I would like to keep all the personal files, settings, software, and just upgrade to a newer version of linux when it comes out. In order to do that, which separate partitions do i need??

Thanks.

/home containts personal files and personal configuration settings. If you change distros or upgrade /home will be untouched.

If you do an upgrade.
If you do a clean install you can still keep your /home partition.
When it comes time to initialize the partitions(format) just skip it (/home) and proceed with the install.
I always do a clean install when changing versions. I've never been able to make the upgrade option work right.

thanks guys!

which partitions do you recommend?
i read somewhere /, /tmp, /var, /usr, /usr/local, /home.
if so, how big each partition should be?

I have a 30G harddrive, and 256 RAM

For a desktop type situation (no big services), /, swap, and /home will be fine. You obviously dont know what you need so why bother right now? The more experience you get the better you will understand how big each partition should be. Ive used a dozen different schemes and Im still not happy with my partitioning right now.
