which OS has more games available. i'm aware there are many different versions of linux, but i know someone who hates microsoft so he bought a mac because he hates windows. i figure maybe get him into linux..it's not microsoft and it's got more adjustable hardware rather than having to pay outrageous prices to get one because you can't build them from scratch. you have to upgrade the entire think. pretty much i just wanna hear reviews on which OS has more games. PUZZLE GAME AND POP-POP are not games i'm talking about... thank you.

Games for the mac:

Tony Hawk's pro skater
Starcraft and Warcraft 3
Quake 3
Red Faction
Civilization 3
Soldier of Fortune 2

Jedi Knight 2 is coming out soon

Linux games:

Um, Quake 3 and the server version of counterstrike?

no, i don't care if it runs on apple hardware, i'm looking to see cause linux can run on a computer you can build from scratch. rather than apple hardware.

Why, he already has a mac?

Anyway, the mac is not a very good gaming platform, and linux is an absolutely horrible gaming platform. If he wants a second machine that's not MS based just to play games on, tell him to get a PS2 or GameCube.

There may be a lot of games for the Mac, but the GOOD ones are available for Linux as well:

Quake 3 Arena
Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2003
SimCity 3000
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Tribes 2
Descent 3
Soldier of Fortune
Neverwinter Nights
Alpha Centauri
The Sims
Kohan

And those are just the ones I can think of at the moment. Check out linuxmall.com for a somewhat more complete list.

Also, for the myriad Windows-only games, you might have some luck with WineX.

I certainly hope you were referring to the somewhat limited selection of games, and not the OS itself, because that would be a lie, plain and simple. If anything, Linux is a far superior gaming platform to Windows, at least according to Quake 3 and UT2K3, both of which run measurably faster under Linux than under Windows on my rig.

Yeah, I was referring to the number of titles available, and also the fact that you're not likely to be able to walk into an EB and walk out with a brand new copy of Quake 3 for linux.

Anyway, the guy's already got a mac, I don't think it'd be worth the money to buy a whole second machine to run a couple games that dont already run on the mac. If he wants a computer for gaming, he should get a windows box.

And now I'm a mac zealot because there's hardly any games for linux

I think you, SaintGRW, are determined to hate your friend's mac no matter what.

notfred is correct, i dislike mac's, i'm not trying to start an arguement but i personally hate them. people hate windows. i hate macs. nothing wrong with that, he doesn't want a window box because he hates microsoft, but to get the mac he wants it's like 1199 bucks for the upgrade or 2499 for the new system where as we could build one that fast for cheaper.

That's fine if you hate macs, but I find it funny when you say "we". It's not your decision. Your friend obviously likes macs. He bought one and seems happy with it. Why don't you just let him use it, and buy whatever games he wants for it? I'm sure he doesn't feel any need to be "converted".

It is fine if you hate Macs, but do you really know why you hate them?

Not the rotten apples again...

If you mean the bastardization of a good computer by putting an Athlon in a quicksilver case, no. Look at my links and you will understand what I meant. Of course you have 5 minutes where you could have done that.

we as in me and him. he say's that mac hardware sucks. he just likes the OS. my reply is linux because it's not windows which he also hates, i dislike mac's because from the one's i've used are slower than i like, and 1 was the same at 800MHz as my computer with 384MB more ram and a Geforce 4 128MB ram to my radeon 7200 64MB of ram. and i run q3 at about 30-50 FPS more. you figure it out. bah, this threads getting off hand, i'm done posting in it. thanks for the help.
