Linux or Win???

I compared nearly 400 WU's between W98FE and WXP Pro. and found XP just over 16% faster (identical hardware, minimal overhead, tweaked ect.)
Currently I'm comparing W2K and finding it slightly faster than XP.

Wow, that's interesting. I would have thought that they were among the slowest because of the drain on system resources.

linux doesn't have development ? I find that very hard to believe given it's open source. You can upgrade a component in linux virtually every day as some part of it is new... new Kernels are available nearly every month if not sooner.... I wish I could update my windows machines as often as I could update my Linux machines..
Linux has been rated by reviewers as one of the fastest developing OS' available due to its open source nature... anyone can make improvements at any time bugs are fixed almost instantly...

Personally I get best results out of my Linux machines than anything else... as geekender mentioned, windows suffers from too much system resource hog.

Actually, Poof did some testing, and found her fastest results was running the Windows CLI client under WINE in Linux. Figure that one out. 😉

Interesting, I'd love to try Linux again on my TBird 1200, however I have a ton of kids Windows programs that they wouldn't part with.
When I finish my third box maybe I'll try again...tried Redhat 6 point something last time and got it installed but had endless trouble setting up certain hardware and software...mostly ignorance/inexperience I guess...😉

The "problem" with the linux client is that it was compiled with gcc. Meanwhile, the windoze client was specially tweeked and compiled with the Intel compiler (Intel, of course, being a BIG sponsor of SETI@Home 😉 )

HOWEVER.... there is NOW an Intel compiler for linux. 😀

So... Will the the linux porter request to recompile the linux client so that it runs just as fast as the CLI?
(/me won't hold her breath... *rolls eyes*)

Seeing as I'm not a big M$ fan I'd thought I'd just nef this here...

<< Linux or Win??? >>

ALWAYS linux 😉

Oh you were talking about for crunching? Read what the others said then 😉 😛 😱

I agree with Twoface. 😎

Medic try RH 7.2. It's what is running my server with an XP1600 & 512 K.

looks like WU going at about 4.5 hrs per

old windoze system looks like it might get one done a day.
