You'll need something like Partition Magic if you want the OS's to share the disk - the free linux tools cannot resize NTFS partitions. If you don't want XP on there at all, that would be easiest. Just tell the installer to use the whole disk, and it will wipe out the old partitions.
As for a "notebook" install, I'm not certain, but I think it's basically the same as the workstation one, plus PCMCIA and power management packages.
