Linux newbie .. questions before i install this

Hey all,

Just picked up a copy of maximum pc last nite, and it has a section on alternate OS's.. Also gives a couple on the cdrom, including QNX and some distro of linux called Athena? .. Can anyone tell me if this is a good distro? I know nothing of linux and am looking to learn, but unfortunately at home my cable modem is down and cannot download any other versions. And here at work I'm stuck behind a severe proxy..

I was given a machine last ntie that I could use to install it, its a cyrix proc running at 233 and I have no other uses for the machine.. So....

Any words of advice, any flames against linux newbies, any thing at all?

edit: and for those who will post websites for people like me, like linuxnewbies.com, the proxy here at work gives me access to about 100 sites and thats it, and the cable is out at home indefinately..

go to this website...i ma alsoa newbie...am waiting for a copy of system commander so i can load linux...this page has links to many interesting and informative sites...there is also a link that will let you find the "flavor" of the linux you are getting ready to play with so you can read a bit about it. kinda cool eh?
 
would be cool.. but as i said above, I'm behind a proxy here that gives me access to a whopping 56 websites (I counted their list of accessible sites), and my cable modem at home is down indefinately, so I can't visit any websites on it...
