Linux newbie needs help networking

Where do I go to find out if my network card has the correct drivers?
Something like device manager.

I have Mandrake 7.2 I have cable modem to SMC Barricade to D-Link network card. I have been trying differn't settings. I was thinking my problem was in my hostname + Domain setting. What do I put here and what is the format?

Anyhow after several reboots I got discouraged, then I decided to ping the router. Kept getting timed out. Now I am thinking it may be a driver problem. If this is a driver problem where do I get it? I went to D-Link's page and found a link for a linux driver but it was a dead link.

Your input would be appreciated.

I could not for the life of me get a d link card or a linksys card to work in my Mandrake 7.2 box, but taking shuxclams advice, I put in a 3c905 PCI card, no problems.

Boy that would be just my luck. I just bought a backup linksys card at office max for $9.00 the other day. 🙁

Linksys works under RH 6.2 but not in Linux RH 7. I am having trouble with installing the card right now so if someone can get that Linksys to work under RH 7 then pm me or email me please...

Thanks

Darno

i couldn't get my linksys to work in mandrake 7.0 or 7.2
i went out and bought a netgear nic and it was simple to setup
3com would be the best but frys down here doesn't carry it anymore and i didn't feel like driving around

After months of ignoring this same config problem (D-link and Mandrake), I dropped in a 3COM from work. Now at least it recognizes the NIC 🙂

I got linux mandrake with duel cards in one 3c905b and one 3c509tpo combo one the 905 using the 590 driver in linux as said possible with 3 com 905's is the one connected to the cable modem the other connected to a network of other machines. I cant get the cable one or the other one working ahhh help plz
