Linux newb needs help!

I'm specifically looking for hulu and netflix transcoding without having to purchase a windows license, any ideas for that?

As far as I know, Netflix requires special Silverlight DRM cryptographic crippleware, and is utterly impossible to use in Linux. Convenience comes at a price...

Wine always sucks. Why not try something native like MediaTomb?

Not always, I've used WINE to play a handful of games with minimal problems. Steam even works pretty well in it. But, like you, I would really recommend something native over WINE any day. And if what you say about the Silverlight DRM requirement is true then the only way to get it working would probably be to have a full Windows environment anyway.
