Linux N00b - Computer specs

I have never used Linux but now have been assigned to a truck driver simulator that has 10 boxes using QNX. So I figured I'd build a box and run Linux to get a feel for it.
I have an AMD 1 GB set up with 512 MB RAM that I was going to use as a Windows file server. I assume Linux will run OK on this box?

An IT guy that I have beenn working with suggested Ubuntu as being able to be a desktop replacement and a server. Is this so?

QNX isn't Linux, although they're fairly similar so if it's just to get yourself acquainted with unix-like OSes it might be ok.

512M of memory might be tight depending on what you try to do with it, but that's about it without knowing any more about the hardware.
 
Ubuntu should run fine on that as long as you don't run any intensive apps. xUbuntu should be a touch lighter, but I don't think it would make that much of a difference.
 
Ubuntu is the "easy" linux out right now, but you can pick from many flavors and run them from a live CD to get an idea. That will help you choose one to run.
 
I've been running Xubuntu on an old HP Pavilion Pentium III 800 MHz machine with 256M of RAM for a few years now. It's incredibly stable. I uninstalled the desktop environment a little while ago after I got used to administrating it remotely over my network. Now it just sits quietly in my closet as a file server and running Torrentflux.
