Mint 13 cinnamon 64bit....trying to install or at least boot to livecd....on the grub menu, i click install, screen goes blank, then a cursor appears and 20 minutes later, im still looking at a blank screen with a useless cursor on it...wtf:confused:
All i can do is move the cursor around.

My bios is the new uefi kind. I read once that linux wont work with them, but i assumed that was only with windows 8 installed, i have win7

I believe it's a UEFI issue. If you aren't in love with Mint, fedora should install pretty well based off the experiences of a friend from another forum. Otherwise, I don't know the answer. You should be able to get Mint working, but it would take some fiddling around to get it going.

Edit:
Here's instructions for setting Debian up with UEFI...

http://tanguy.ortolo.eu/blog/article51/debian-efi

Debian is a fine O/S, and will be similar to Mint. You may just want to use that. Otherwise, the instructions may be adaptable to install Mint do to the similarity of the systems, but I have no personal experience.

Maybe the gfx driver isn't loading. Does it run as a live CD?

No
Not sure how to load without grapghic drivers

Btw, Fedora 17 doesnt work either. It hangs when i get to the option to try fedora or install to harddrive, i can move mouse cursor around, thats it.

Stock bios settings, windows 7 installs from my usbs like butter

Yeah, im about to nerd rage, just teetering on the edge atm.

What's the specific machine? I doubt I can personally help, but I may find something with DuckDuckGo.

solved.
i read that USB and UEFI don't really mix. To use DVD instead. i did and got it to load to LiveCD but only under recovery mode.
installed to drive just fine, but now the issue is that nvidia drivers do not function. i tried several versions including older ones. same every reboot, a bland desktop, like its stuck in recovery mode or something i dunno.

Try using the libre drivers, Nouveau. They've worked pretty well for me. They aren't really good enough for gaming, but they'll power a compositing desktop fine.

This has been my experience as well. Glad to not have to use nvidia's drivers :)
