On low resource systems, I highly recommend Xfce and Lxde for desktop environments. However one could squeeze out a bit more resources using a window manager and running lightweight applications, but that isn't suitable for everyone. In addition to the above, you typically select which desktop you want to use at login. Later deleting a desktop environment can leave a lot of cruft in the system. It doesn't hurt anything aside from taking up space, but that can be a concern on low resource systems.
Manjaro. I haven't had any issue playing games through Steam or using Wine to the few Windows game I have.I used debian and mint for about 2 years and if I remember well I did try different desktops, but it's better to be sure.
Something else I'd like to ask. Is there a game friendly distro out there?
None that are still current that I know off besides SteamOS.Manjaro is based is based on Arch. Any other Debian based game distributions?
