linux messenger

Gaim is what you want. It's included in all major distros, but you may need to search the web for the newest version, due to recent changes in MS's network.
 
yes, gaim came with mandrake, but i cant get it to work. when i try to sign in with messenger, it says "protocol not supported" what am i doing wrong? i am a complete linux newb and i dont know what tarballs are (tried to download from the gaim site)

Try upgrading. Microsoft has been blocking non-microsoft clients recently.

If you are using Mandrake, you should download the Mandrake RPM.

you want 0.71, versions prior to that wont work with msn

when i try to run the thing i downloaded, i get an error saying i cant, im using mandrake 9.2, the downloads are for 9.1, is that why they dont work?

Unlike Windows error messages, Linux gives you useful and often necessary information when something doesn't work. When you ask for help, try to include output whenever you can.

Well, despite the self-righteous howlings of the /. crowd, it wasn't at all clear to me that MS was really trying to shut out 3rd party clients. Sounded more like they just wanted people to upgrade their Messenger/MSN.

 
ok, well, i got the develepor's one to install, but i dont know how to get to it (it had devel somewhere in its name so i assume it was develepor's). if this wont work, tell me and ill post the error for the regular one.
 
*-devel packages contain libraries, headers, and other programming-related stuff - not the program itself. You need to get the regular package installed.

OK. Try urpmi gaim-0.71-1mdk9.1.i586 - that will locate and pull in required dependencies. There might still be versioning conflicts, though, in which case you'll have to wait for 9.2 packages to become available. That shouldn't take long. Probably a week or two, tops.
 
It's a command (bold = command, for me). You enter it at a Konsole or other terminal. You'll need to be root, I think, to use it - become root by entering su, then entering the root password when prompted.
 
Two things...

First off, the package name ends with .rpm - the output you posted before cut that out, but it's there nonetheless. So add .rpm to the end of that command. Sorry I didn't notice that earlier.

Second, the package has to be in the same directory that you run the command from. Since Konsole should start you in your "home directory," put the package there, rather than on your desktop or somewhere else.
 
ok, i put the file into the home directory on my desktop and opened konsole. i first typed in su, then urpmi gaim-0.71-1mdk0.1.i586.rpm, and got the same message as when i double clicked on it.
