Linux makes my monitor shut off!!!

I installed Redhat Linux 7.2 ... no problems.
When I start up it goes to the command line... no problems.
When I type startx it loads the GUI just fine... no problems.
BUT.... if I ever logout to drop back to the command line my monitor shuts off.... PROBLEM!!!

I have to hit ctrl-alt-del to reboot (and from the sound of it does go thru the shutdown process because it takes a while for it to finish). Then everything starts back up just fine. It will always start at the CLI, but if I go to the GUI and later try to drop back out to the command line, the monitor shuts off.

What could be the problem?

Someone please help!

P.S. - I don't think this is version or distro specific, because I believe it did the same thing with RH7.1 and with a version of Mandrake as well. (can't remember exactly, its been a few months since I tried, and had to give up).

also, if your monitor is just going into standby mode, try shutting it off and turning it back on. a similar thing happened to me once while trying to set up X for the first time 😛

Sorry BingBongWongFooey, I should have said the monitor goes into standby (the led changes from green to orange).

But turning it off completely and then on again does nothing.

n0cmonkey, when I get home I will try switching to another virtual terminal.

Well, I've tried switching to another virtual terminal after the monitor has powered down, but it remains powered down.

Also, if I'm using the GUI and switch to a virtual terminal the monitor will power down as well.

Apparently anytime I do anything that switches from the GUI, back to the regular old CLI, causes the monitor to power down.

Are there any configuration settings that I may be able to adjust that could remedy this, as its truly annoying the crap out of me.

I have an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon (32 MB). I don't think that there's a known problem with this card, as It's listed in the XFree86 setup.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried posting at comp.os.linux??
You see over here only a few people will help you with linux stuff, and these people
have their distros of choice, so unless it's a problem that can be replicated in another
distro or in another machine you're out of luck...

My only suggestion would be to try a different X server, perhaps the VGA server!

most of us dare not to ask linux related questions. i know i don't, for fear of a severe flaming. just read, figure it out yourself. it's much more fun and you learn to do it yourself!! =P

afropick I have a similar problem, but mine is a bit worse. My flatpanel (connected through DVI) tells me it's not getting any more data after I go into xwindows. It comes back alive when I exit xwindows.. 😛

There no need for that, you only have to see that people get anoyed about being asked the same question many times, as well
as being asked questions that a google/linuxdoc search would solve...
Of course there people that can read an answer to a problem and still no be confident enough to implement them!!
But this is a different case, I've said this in many places, what I don't like is lack of commitment to a problem!

People asking how I do this and how I do that, and don't even bother looking for the answer first...

aceO07 your problem is not worse, you get back to command line afropick doesn't!
But your problem might be solve with correct modelines, do a search for that in google or linuxdoc! I'm not familiar with
dvi interfaces, I only know flatpanels from laptops and there everything works fine!
