linux machine as a print server

jhu

Lifer
how do i do this? we've a linux server and my roommates' windows computers. They're all networked. how do i setup a print server and what settings do i enter for the windows machines?

What I mean is, when you setup Samba the printers on the Linux box will appear shared in Network neighborhood.

Yes.

No, check out the Cups printing system. It will let you send raw data to the printer, installing specific drivers on the windows machine instead of installing postscript drivers to send data to the printer. I was playing with it in Mandrake 7.2 and it was handy.

Actually, you can print to lpr or tcp printers from windows, and it is very easy to set up an lpr print server...im sure there is a how-to out there, jsut do a search for "linux lpr print server" or something similar. Samba has made some serious leaps in its effectiveness, however it is still fairly unreliable and much more difficult to setup.
Cheers!
