Linux login problem

I've got a problem ssh-ing into a remote debian box. It authenticates properly, but then doesn't do anything once i get the "last login: (date)" dialog.

Note: it became like this when I went to some directory i wanted to empty out and did "rm *" and it just froze. I could log in with another putty and kill the runaway rm process, but after that, when i cd-ed to that directory, and did "ls", it froze again haha. After that ,I've been unable to login via ssh (though seems the webserver's running fine).

Any ideas?

With that little information I would guess that the kernel oops'd and now any access to the disk results in a hang because the kernel can't get the request through because either the filesystem or the block layer went belly up.

If you still have a shell you could try running 'dmesg' but there's a good chance it won't work either and eventually the web server will fail, if it's really working it's probably either working off a seperate disk or straight from the disk cache for now.

Yeah, webserver's down now too *sigh*. I guess it needs a kick then. I hope I can get through to the admin soon...

Hmm, interesting, my friend was able to login to his account, no problem. I will ask him to change his password and let me use his account to transfer some stuff over, etc. Perhaps "su" without cd-ing might help.... I'm pretty sure I didn't touch any of my rc files, and that shouldn't mess anything up anyway... hmm..

well, at this point, it's not responding to anything. I just have to wait for the admin to check his email and do something about it, preferably kick it :)... I am highly curious as to what happened to it, since it has a few things I would like to grab off of it...
