actually, sucky news, wrong forum!

the new kernel does bloat a few improvements, but they don't apply much to the casual user (from what i read).

stick with 2.2.18 for a secuure kernel (patches added if needed)
and 2.3.* for the latest 'stable' kernel

don't upgrade if you don't have to unless you have some time and know what you are doing or are 31337

trend, that is possibly the most boneheaded piece of advice I have ever read here, and that says a lot considering where we are. FYI 2.3 kernels are less stable that 2.4, not more. Complaining about kernel bloat and the creeping feature creature etc. etc. just reeks of that typical clueless newbie reaction when they happen upon topic they don't know anything about: find a way to complain about it.

I'm not saying 2.4 is the answer to all my prayers, but it's a step in the right direction...

Just wanted to clear some stuff up about this. Kernels that are odd numbered (2.1.x, 2.3.x, etc) are development kernels and are for testing. Even numbered kernels (2.2.x, 2.4.x, etc) are production kernels. If you'd like a reference to this, you can check the Kernel-HOWTO at:

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO

The 2.4 kernel includes a USB hotplug fix (for whoever posted previously about that). Some other recent fixes include an update to the tulip driver along with squishing some bugs. But if you are using it for a desktop, 2.4.x is going to give you little improvement (IMHO). However, it's always wise to be up-to-date with the newest kernel level.. again, IMHO.
