Linux installation question

I download a file for Linux installation. The file name is MandrakeLinux-8.2rc1-CD1.i586. Currecntly I use Win2000. I clicked on the file and it asked for file name extension. Can someone can explain to me how can I install Linux?

You need to devote some quality time to reading up on what you're doing before you blow away some important data. The Linux Installation HOWTO is a good place to start.

Its probably an iso file (hard to tell since you either didnt include the extention or it got cut off (how can people use a system without making it show you ever file's extention?)). Burn it to disk to use it, but I recomend reading up on this stuff first, Im tired of stupid questions

i was just messing around that is one of the first things i do when installing windows, turn off hidden files and show file extensions, i dont see how you can get by without seeing file extensions, you cant even tell a wav from an mp3 (usually same icon) :/

hey mikeshn, try starting here, thats one of the more in depth things i read before installing linux, it covers the fundamental things that you definitely should know before diving in.

The Mandrake installation should be pretty self-explanitory, although I don't know, I've never used it. Where ever you got that ".iso" image, (if that's what it is ) should provide info on how to burn the image. If you want to keep 2K, ( which you probably wont after learning Linux ) make sure you have a seperate partition or hard drive to install it on. If you have to re-partion your drive, make sure you install Windows FIRST! Also, don't try to install it through Windows. Just have your system boot off the CD-ROM, and install through there.

Nah you're not picky at all. Winblows is stupid with respect to extensions and file types. The way it does associations blows, since it doesn't really know the true type of the file. I think WXP attempts to correct this a bit by allowing multiple application associations to an extension, but that's not a real solution.
