Linux installation problems

For Linux experts:I have installed Linux (Mandrake Linux 7.2). Logged in but can't get past this weird command that looks like this [name@server name]$ What do I do now.
need an answer as soon as possible.

Looks like you've had your first experience with BASH :) . This is the normal Unix styled prompt where you can see what machine you are at and who you are logged in as. To get into the GUI you should type "startx".

Thanks cirrus1 - I will check that link out. I just need to see how this OS works since i have a spare computer lying around.

Thanks again for the help guys - "bash" - just finished bashing my head against Linux/Win2K and with win2k could not get on the internet even tough I could see all computers on the network.
Alright enough pissing around for 1 day with Linux/MS - using WinME for now. Later tonite on to Whistler.

Linux is a very powerful operating system, far more so than any version of Windows available. But it still has quite some ways to go in terms of ease of use. You'll have to devote far more than 1 day to Linux before you will be comfortable with it -- mainly due to the fact that it's so different from any Microsoft operating system, but also partly because it can still sometimes be difficult to set up properly. I do think it's worth the time, to become comfortable with Linux -- one of the few truely reliable PC operating systems available. The only Microsoft creation that even comes close as far as stability is concerned is Windows 2000.

Since I've been using Linux off-and-on since 1994, I sometimes forget that not everyone can get a Linux install functioning easily or quickly...
