CAN SOMEONE ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS FOR ME? I AM TRYING TO INSTALL LINUX ONTO MY K7T TURBO MB BASED SYSTEM USING THE RAID CONTROLLER (1 + 0) AND DEBIAN 2.2r4 DOESN'T SEE MY HARD DRIVE. (imbedded controller on the MB is promise). THIS IS ONLY MY 2nd INSTALL OF LINUX. THANX

Now on to your question. Is it an option to run the hard drive on the mobo's non-raid controller? I could be very wrong but I don't think that the promise RAID setups supported a single drive and I seriously doubt Linux would see and/or support a raided set of drives. If you can move the drive to the mobo's controller then you shouldn't have a problem seeing the hard drive. Also, a few might flame me for this, but if this is your first install try out something other than Debian. Some newbies do install Debian sucessfully first (as a matter of face Debian was the first distro I ever installed), but it's not quite a fool proof as some others (namely Redhat and Mandrake. I've heard Suse and Lycoris are fairly easy too but haven't tried them myself). With something like Mandrake you can at least get a feel for Linux and then when you want to tinker more you should then try out Debian or Slackware (or you could also stick with Mandrake. as polished up as it is there's still a command prompt under there ).

The 2,2 series kernel that Debian ships with does not have nmative support for Promise IDE controllers. Debian does include a patched version called 2.2.19-ide which includes support for Promise controllers. It's been a while since I've made boot floppies for debian, but the included documentation should get you through.

MGMorden, I actually had 2.2r2 installed (with help) on this particular box as part of a dual boot with win2k, using xosl as my boot loader, but I got sort of greedy. I wanted the media drives (toshiba dvd and lite-on cd-rw) on seperate ide channels for obvious reasons. I had the raid and thought I would see if it supported a single drive (it does) If I configure this back as it was, then I could still dual boot. So I attempted a new install with 2.2r4 (debian) and got stuck with the old no drive found to mount problem. And yes, getting X to run on my radeon LE was not even close to fun when I did it 8 months ago.
