hey guys,

tried installing linux for the third time now, and every time, i am getting an error when attempting to go into X windows.

not sure of the exact error im getting, but its something along the lines of:

flashing about 20 times of the login prompt and then no images found.

Not sure what the problem is, i think i have good iso files, but not sure how to check (in windows preferrably as im new to linux). But, i think i am quite competent to input commands if need be.

let me know what you think. d/l new iso's last night so ill try today.. maybe that will do something.

seems to me that it is a video card issue. I am running a Geforce 4 ti 4200.... oh yeah, its redhat 7.3.

thanks

Perhaps you mean "no screens found"? Try booting with the text option and see if you can install that way, if so it's not terribly hard to setup X afterwards.

When you download the isos check the md5sum to make sure it's not corrupt.

For a GeForce 4, you'll need nvidia's binary drivers for X. They're on their site, or download.nvidia.com via FTP.

The instructions there should do, if not, just ask.

yeah, perhaps that is correct "no screens found." I'm a little confused.. I am under the impression that you need to type "startx" at command prompt after a succesful install. If that is the case, then I have done that correctly and I get the "no screens found" error, if you need to actually setup X windows, then i am completely retarded. Well, how does one "setup" X windows? I'll check in to the driver issue... thanks guys. I apologize if i am insulting linux operators by not knowing a damn thing. Oh yeah, what is a good program to use to copy ISO to CDr's

Just log in as root and run Xconfigurator from the shell. There are other ways, but this is a pretty straight-forward one.

Also if you try startx and it fails check your home directory for a .xsession-errors or .xerrors file; something like that. It should give you something to help with your problem.
