Linux Help

I just installed The Fedora Project For an OS and love it so far, now ive beent rying to fiddle around with it but need help, I cant seem to find out how to play mp3's, or watch wmv videos, is this even possible for linux and does anyone know a good place for linux freeware.

http://www.fedorafaq.org/

This site can help you in setting up basic things.

As far as wmv videos go, look for the win32codec package. I think that should allow you to play wmv files, if not then get VLC player. VLC plays any video/audio file I throw at it.

Oh and if you want to stream the wmv or any other video/audio file from Firefox then get the Mozilla MPlayer plugin, xine-mozilla-plugin, or whichever one you want (vlc itself should install one).

Freshmeat and SourceForge are two sites where you can find linux software. However, read the Fedora FAQ, installing programs in linux is different from installing programs in windows.

I can not figure out how to get a mp3 player and how to install it. any help would be greatly appricated

error: Failed dependencies:
fedora-release = 4 is needed by yum-fedorafaq-4-2005.11.29

that is the message I get when i am at this step
Now, install my yum configuration (Updated 29 November 2005), using this command:
rpm -Uvh http://www.fedorafaq.org/yum

You might want to try the most recent version of fedora then. Which one do you have installed?

It's fedor Project Core 2 X86, id like to thank you guys for helpin me out, I have tried to do it myself but no luck at all, Ive been using windows up until yesterday, I was installing a driver for a wireless card and sure enough got an error tryed to reboot and scan everything and had no luck and decided im down with windows. So what should I try for getting mp3's going. Thanks in advance

Try a version of fedora that's not way outdated. Seriously, you'll get much better support. The latest if fc4.

well got the new version iso, and i dont think the cd creator with this can burn isos so i download xcdx and there are instructions but clueless please help.

How to install RPMs?
After you have downloaded all the RPMs for your distribution (or created them yourself), you have to install them.
First update the cdrtools-packages (unless you have newer versions installed) with the following command:

rpm -U cdrtools*.rpm

If this went ok, install the RPM for X-CD-Roast:

rpm -U xcdroast*.rpm

Note: You may get an error "cannot remove /usr/lib/xcdroast-0.98 - directory not empty" while updating. Please ignore, all is fine.

This was it! Have fun with X-CD-Roast!

this in my opinion is where distros like ubuntu really set themselves apart your installs are so much easier...for fedora core easiest thing for me when I had it was to install real media player 10 downloaded it and installed it and it played mp3's *1-2-3 * and I was done.

Goodluck...you will eventually get it with fedora but its not as intuitive.

If you are changing, you also may want to try another distro...I dislike FC/RHEL for package management. Not much experience with FC, but I have to listen to peopel at work hunting down packages sometimes.

Ubuntu is a good, out of box install that works with almost all modern hardware out of box (my dell laptop only lacked 3d support for my ati card) and installs of things are a breeze. for example, to add mp3 support, you add a repository to synaptic, and then install win32codecs. Looking for a program? Synaptic is great for searching for an alternative, and installing is dang quick and easy.

Things are hard for you becasue you are doing things the wrong way, don't go looking for packages packages should come to you, use YUM and make your life much easier.

Let me give you a little piece of advice, go to terminal , become root , then type

yum -y install yumex

After that you will go to system tools ----> Yum extender

Yum extender is a graphical enviroment where you can select what applications you need to install from fedora servers, and YUM will figure out what packages to grab for you. Trust me it will make everything easier for you.

And concerning installing an rpm you know that all you need to do with it is double click it right ?

Once you install Yum extender go here and install livna-release4 by clicking that red link there and providing your root password.

Now you will have livna repos in addition to your fedroa repos and that's usually enough packages to go around IMHO.

Fedora Core 4 is a very nice choice for you, you will find a big user base and alot of avilable applications more than any other distro out there, or at least that's what found. And may I suggest Fedora Forums so that you can have acess to trouble shooting issues in the future.

This would be some good info, if he were using FC4. Unfortunately he is using FC2 and trying to burn the FC4 isos so he can then install FC4.

the reason you are hearing no sound is because the default is probably volume muted.
go to a terminal and type alsamixer
you will see a series of slider bars and switches.
the switches are little square boxes with MM in them. If they are black the switch is off if they are green the switch is on. You toggle the switch by pressing M on your keyboard.
chances are you are set up with analog sound and the switch is off use the arrow key in alsamixer to keep going way over to the right till you find the right switch.
If you have a player playing while you do this it will be obvious when you hit the right switch.
