uh, hhmm....yea...hhmmm. I'm using a WAP, which, I would assume, is by default, a router...what ports need to be open? hhmm and how do i open them? Hehe, how do check to see if they are open to begin with. I'm using XP.

I just read over this post and I sound like a freaking moron, sheesh.

You can't leave us hanging with just that...

For a VERY short time:
http://n0c.homeunix.net/fah/myofldxremastered.iso

I'll try to find another host for it later.

Currently, the script is in /home/ofdx or whatever. I'll fix it later. Try fah_2_0.sh start. It may not work, it didn't on my quick test. 🙁 PM or email me if it doesn't. I'll be working on it. The md5sums don't seem to match up, but it works fine using http and when I run it on my slack machine. I don't understand it off hand, but I'll figure it out. 😉

What does work is fah_2_0.sh http. To use it, put a copy of your client.cfg and a file called custom.cfg on a webserver somewhere (if you need a little space for these files, I can definitely help out). custom.cfg is just the flags you want to use:
-forceSSE -forceasm
etc

Maybe later check that ftp site mentioned above. They seem to have a writable ftp.

😉

EDIT: I was wrong, it doesn't appear to be there. 🙁 But my download will work for a while.

Hey, what did you do to get that running? I'm working on a minimalist slack w/2.4.26 and the forcedeth modules using those linux live cd scripts. I should be able to get it mostly finished tonight, so you could use that instead as a base for your scripts if you want. the linux live cd scripts have these things they call modules(not to be confused with kernel modules), so you can insert your script on the fly into the live-cd(while it's running - see the slax docs for more details)

EDIT:seems I missed when exactly I passed the 200 post milestone, but I did 🙂(here's the smiley you forgot n0cmonkey: 😛)

EDIT2: I'm having some unforseen problems with my slack install. looks like it won't get finished tonight 🙁

please do not do that, if ya need it hosted there just PM me, I will download the new one and ask the owner of the FTP, to either delete the first one and allow the new one, or if ya'll need both, I will ask him to host both. I doubt that he will do both though 🙁

I am gonna DL the new one as to have it ready to upload if needed 😀

I burned the iso on another machine. Worked fine. 😕

EDIT3: I got a preliminary slax knock-off booting fine, with the forcedeth module 🙂. the only problem I'm having now is how to get the iso off this old thing...will get something figured out 😛 (and, you are right, this stuck-out tongue face is getting...addicting)

I ordered some parts today. I'm planning on setting up a minimal slack install to make a live-cd distro if I can. Any notes, hints, or catch 22s are appreciated. 😉

Hmm, pick the expert package selection option, and most of what you want is in the A, and N sections. be careful with that expert, but, sometimes, you can remove some of the REQUIRED packages if you want.

For a truly minimal install, I would also run the patch mentioned here.make sure you do this last, though, as it breaks the remove package list to save some space, so removeing packages after this becomes a pain.

Another hint:make friends with du, as there is a lot of junk lying around even though you did your best during the install phaze. ALSO, don't forget to install the latest kernel with installpkg, downloadable from This Page

AND, you will need two commands, mkzisofs, and mkzftree. you can just extract these from however you got them, and put them in /usr/bin. that will work just fine, so no need to fill up your computer with manpages, etc. you might also want to not forget that you need to extract linux-live to somewhere in /tmp so it isn't on your live-cd. once you extract it, you will want to run runme.sh, as found inside the linux-live directory

That's all I can think of right now...I'll edit if I can think of any more

Well I finally had some time to burn the overfoldinex iso and try it out on a new AMD 1400+. It worked flawlessly. All I had to do was go in and change the team ID and the name.

I am still a little jittery because I'll be loosing all the work if my breakers goes out. 🙁

Ok, so I've got the diskless linux machine running. It is getting internet connection through my server that is hooked up wirelessly to my WAP and using ICS to give all my folding machines internet access. My question is, how do I see it's progress without physically going to the machine.
I am running FAH logstats and just put in the machine name of all the Win98 and Win XP machines that are hooked up to my server and it allows FAH logstats access to their files, how do I do this with the linux machine?

Thanks,
Martin

You can try putting the IP address in there. Although, I'm guessing it requires SMB access...

EDIT: You can try SSHing into the machine too. Download PuTTY.

actually, my question is alot dummer than that. How do I get the IP address of the linux machine? That is my dumb question.

ifconfig tells you ip/mac address info

not so dumb, I was in the same spot just a few days ago, I forgot to write it down before running Ofdx. I looked in the router logs to find it before I found out the command.

Well, I got my one diskless rig up and running. Thanks for all your time and effort, Osage, n0cmonkey
, yelo333 and everyone else that's invested time and effor on this. You guys kick and I know there are alot of folks out there that will benefit from your contributions.
My unit is working pretty good. I'm just a bit leery of changing all my crunchers to diskless system, as I could lose alot of crunch time if they come down. Has anyone set up a linux system that saves to a remote server?
Maybe some kind of program could be written that works like FAHstats but copies the work files from the different machines to the machine running FAHstats? Maybe a program like this already exists?
Can a file be copied that is being used?

Thanks
