Linux guru wanted to update Overfoldnix

Update: I had a e-mail from David the developer of this project. He said as time permitted he was working on a new Overfoldnix II.
Stanford now wants the client not to be distributed from anywhere but Stanford. So a script will be needed to download the current client. Who knows about scripts ? Can we use one from another DC run from CD distro and modify it ?

If interested in helping please drop by the forum and see if you can contribute.

Hi all; being a uber Linux n00b I have had limited sucess with my venture into diskless DC. I have used a number of DC distros, and most of them work to a degree, but they are mostly remastered Knoppix, or require a fullblown nix server on a local network.

why would you need an office suite, web browser, and all the other stuff if you intend to Fold and nothing else ? ? ?

I found Overfoldnix just the other day and it WORKS, very small only a 17mb ISO, only about six commands to start, stop, configure the client. In other words almost perfect for a set it and forget it diskless Folding rig.......but it still uses the old 3.25 client, and lacks the ability to add any switches. It does run with the advmethods by default, but needs to have forceSSE, and the other switches avalible if needed by the user.

Forum

The project page is <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/ofdx/">HERE</a>, be sure to read the 0.3a details for the login password <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=186409">Here</a> . The project is based on Mandrake 8.2 I believe.

If any of you ppl who know their way around Linux could update the client even this would truly be a godsend for Folding, and DC in general. I would think that it could also be configured to run SETI or some other project as well, but perhaps that should be left to a seperate disto so as not to complicate Overfoldnix. Ther real beauty of this is just how small and uncomplicated it is.

Please have a look if you think you might be able to make these few changes.

thanks for looking

I'm a Linux n00b too, but this is looking good, hopefully someone can get the new client in there and force me to spend more cash on crunchers.

I'll see what I can do tonight. shouldn't be too hard, as an upgrade to v4 isn't much of a big change. would need web space, though

EDIT: the latest overclockix DOES, in fact, have F@H 4.0. YAY!

EDIT2:wait...I was wrong. I was looking at overclockix. but, use that instead, is my solution, as that does have F@H 4

I've been dabbling off and on with Morphix. If I can get it working with Wine, I should be able to run SETI faster, along with DPAD, etc. :)

Overclocknix has a number of bugs, I have tried the last 2 versions.
It is much harder to setup and configure, takes much longer to install when you reboot a machine, plus it is a full Knoppix install.
I don't need a office suite, browser, media player, or any of the other stuff that it loads up.

Overfoldnix on the other hand is very simple, compact, and works right the first time. A much better solution IMHO

Maybe a stripped down knoppix with a variety of clients...

Ken_g6's idea is interesting too. Maybe I'll noodle this tonight.

OK, I've got a version running with FAH 4(it's night time now - see above :) )...
do you guys also want me to change team name/user name? to 198 for team, and ???? for name, or soemthing like that?

EDIT: went ahead with the changes I mentioned, although I made the name [TA]???????? instead
The cd seems to be working well, so, I'm ready to upload the iso to some webserver somwhere :)

Once again, just need some webspace!

and, I found this guide, which I found very helpful:

http://www.teamhelix.net/ofdx.html

Hope this works!

You have Overfoldnix running with V4 of the client ?

Stanford frowns on the client/core being distributed from anywhere but their servers, that's why David is tring to write a script to download whatever is the current client when you run the program.

Did you just insert the V4 client where the old client was ? Can the forceSSE switch be added ?

Hmm, OK, I didn't know about that. I'll see if I couldn't get a wget command to run on boot, to download the latest client. that shouldn't be so hard...

I inserted teh V4 client, and changed a few of the config files which pointed to the old FAH3 executable - just grep'd the cd for the text FAH

most excellent, your work is greatly appreciated.

I added a link to the post above to Plugscript, this is a tool for Knoppix remastering, not sure if it will be of any help on this.
David did say that Overfoldnix was only loosely based on Mandrake.

Well, wget started complaining about some openSSL problem...something's making me think we are going to have to get permission to distribute FAH with this thing(don't forget that that's exactly what the origional overfoldix does).

at any rate, I got it all working IF I copy the FAH4 executable on the cd

sadly, I don't think Knoppix scripts would work for this, as knoppix has a significantly different tree setup(like the compressed KNOPPIX filesystem)

LOONNGGG EDIT:so, it seems to be done, and fully functional(including -forceSSE). the one problem is that I HAD to put the FAH4Console-Linux.exe on there. do you have any links on the "frowning" issue? this executable doesn't have any of the actual folding program, just enough to download the latest one(like FAHCore_78.exe)

And, I still need webspace form sombody(just 18mb), unless you don't mind d/l'ing 350k chunks, and running one of those file-splitting programs normally used to span floppies, as I have 2 gb of free web space, just max file size on the server is 350k

ok, probably won't check forums again tonight, so you probably won't get any more replies until tomorrow

I have a bit of web space avalible thru my IPS, haven't used it yet. I will go have a look and see how much and what I need to do to use it.

bummer tried to get to my webspace and got this message... "Due to ongoing updates to our Member Services feature, this option is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience, and appreciate your patience as we continue to improve your service experience"

nice link to teamhelix net, good stuff there

I'm kind of a n00b at this here diskless client thingie but let me see if I can get this straight....The object of the game is to run the machine with a barebones configuration which does not include a hard drive. Yet, this boot is a CD, so we're exchanging the hard drive for a CD? Can I then unplug the CD-ROM when I'm done? I guess if it's a USB CD-ROM I can, but not IDE.
My next question, if it's running using a RAMDISK, which I assume it is, we need to set up some way of maintaining the checkpoint files so that if the machine crashes when it's 99% done, we don't lose the work. Can it be set up to read my winblows NTFS partition so that I can put the checkpoint files in there?

I'm confused.
Martin

I have a comcast account with comcast. It offers me 25M of storage. If it can stay under that, I can host it. It will force me to set up a webpage and figure out how to do it.

good idea.........MDE

trevinom, I have no idea.
Overclocknix is suppose to have the ability to run the client across a LAN using a shared folder on a windows box. but since Overclocknix is a different beast it may not help.

how to across a LAN

I will get a list of the various links I have found regarding this stuff and PM or post here shortly. Hopefully some of you Linux knowlegable ppl will be able to figure this stuff out.

I just partitioned some space on my dual rig I may take a crack at remastering Knoppix myself..sure to be learning experience...LOL
I lack skills

Completely OT, but it looks like the language filter was reset after the upgrade (it actually allowed stab).
EDIT: and a lot of other words I would have been banned for if I hadn't edited them out.

EDIT: Deleted everything, as I don't believe stanford would appreciate it(distributing FAH 4), so pulling it down till I know for sure

Ok I had a reply on the official F@H forums from Ivoshiee, he was kind enough to point me to finstall, a FAH install &amp; startup script. his post is below with links.

One way to fix the FAH client distribution problem is to add "finstall" to this distro.

finstall:
http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=2283
finstall/folding support forum .txt version:
the download link to the latest ver 3.3 is on page 11 of the above thread
http://www.vendomar.ee/%7Eivo/finstallFAQ.txt

If You see some feature(s) missing then let me know, it can be added.

this should help.

thanks to everyone who is lending a hand with this, I'm sure this can be a great tool for many ppl, not just for us here at AT, but everywhere.

Just a quick update on my "work":

I got a live-cd working via overfoldix, which does NOT have FAH 4 on it - it DOES use wget to download it on the fly.

Still looking for a way to get it off my computer, as I don't leave it on 24/7, so me running a bittorrent tracker wouldn't work well - anybody know of a good public tracker site?

Yelo, Morphix might be useful to you as well. The key to Morphix is that it has one big compressed ISO (with a .mod extension), and also can have several little ISOs ("miniMods"). So maybe you could package your stuff in a minimod and tell people to combine it with one of the main ISOs? It's what I'm planning to do.

Edit: Almost forgot - here's a script to help generate miniMods. :)

How big is it? If it's not obscenely huge send it to me and I'll seed the Torrent as long as someone else is willing to seed it with me.
