Linux gaming. Does it really exist?

I get tempted to build a Linux box around this time every year (usually after a BSOD in Windows 2000), and I always end up not doing it because of the conspicuous lack of games for Linux.

Has this changed? Is there a good, effective way to play most games in Linux without too uch work?

And there are quite a few ports over already. Anything directx will require wine, anything opengl can be easily ported over (whether or not it's been done is another matter of course).

directx is nonexistant in linux as far as i know.. wine lets you emulate most openGL games though.

Why not just dual-boot ?
You can switch to linux for everything but games.

By the way, I've never had a hang or crash with Win XP.

uhhh... not really buddy. OpenGL is runs native and good (especially with nvidia kernel modules)...mesa anyone?, directX only runs under wine. Enemy Territory works fine in gentoo, so does UT and couple of other games. The wine way is pain in the ass to get going, but people run counterstrike and stuff just fine
