Linux for common use

Hi,

So I'm upgrading the computer. for school. law school. Would like to wait 'til september and get an athlon 64. Will be used for word processing, trillian-like functions, cd recording, email, opera-like functions, and, well, all the day-to-day stuff you normally associate with computer use; maybe a little harddrive running windows for games et al.

Emphasis on stability . . .

I'm curious if anyone knows what distribution i should get, if there's easy-to-use software for all this stuff, and in general how the windows-to-linux transition is.

thanks much in advance.

This is not General Hardware related.
