Hola, i have a few "how to" questions and was hoping maby someone could tell me how to set up a local file server (not FTP) on linux and suggest a good remote desktop type package to use. I am using Red Hat 8 (maby 9 if i get around to burning the ISO's). I have a good working knowledge of linux and networking but really am at a loss as to how to approch this. I have 3 other boxes on the same network all running winXP and would like to be able to use the linux machine as a place to store everything else. Also i have ditched the monitor with it and am admining it mainly through SSH, but would like to be able to use the GUI (the problem is the only other computer in the same room with it is a laptop, and theres not really room for a monitor) is Samba the program used to make an NT accessable file server? Is VNC a remote desktop program that i could use? Please be as specific as possible and i appreciate your input.

VNC will work, but I honestly dont see why you would need a gui to admin a samba box. samba is a piece of cake to setup even through ssh. you can always try webmin too to admin samba using a browser.

youll need to install vncserver on the linux box if you want to use the gui. an alternative would be to run a X Server on the windows box and push the linux display to that. there are some howto's for that....you might want to google it

You might check out swat which is a web admin too for samba as well. Webmin is another option worth investigating. I'm with n4s too, ditch the gui :)

To be honest i want the gui so i can log into it at work and browse the web remotely to bypass our web filter which will not let me view anything that has the word "game" in its meta. But dont tell anyone that ;)
