Linux Fedora Installation problem

I am a total Ninux newbie. I got a book "Red Hat Linux Fedora fo Dummies" as part of a Compute Book Club. Really I didn't want it but I forgot to check th "Do not send box." I figured what the heck - I'm building a new box and it's a good time to duall boot it with XP and learn Linux. Much to my chagrin, I discovered that the distribution does not work because it cannot see my Seagate S-ATA drive which I have installed via ICH5 on my machine (works great with XP).

Is there a way to preload some drivers so that this Core 1 installation can see the HD so that I might load the installation from CD? I want to avoid adding a P-ATA device to the machine. Please don't use Linuxese on me because I am a total Newbie on this. I have Partition Magic available if that can make my task easier.

You will need to create a boot disk to start from which loads the kernel module for your SATA, do you have the drivers downloaded? If so, please link me to where you can download them and i will try to help you out.

If not, find me the link where they can be downloaded and i will try to help. :)

If you have broadband, downloading core 2 or waiting a bit for core 3 might be a better solution.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually d'led the package in text mode ang got pretty far with it but it ended up conking out my MBR so that my machine would no longer boot up XP even after running fdisk/mbr from the command line. I then wiped out all my partitions and tried installing Linux again in text mode from a clean disk. It loaded but got stuck on reboot in configuring 1394 ports. I had limited time left for my little project so I decided to just wipe the Linux install and reinstall my XP stuff again so the machine is useable

I'm saving this for another day. I will look into a core 2 download as n0monkey suggests - yes I have broadband. Perhaps the fix is there for the 1394, too. If I encounter problems with he SATA I will take Klixxer's advice on the boot disk approach. I'll let you know how I make out. Once again - thanks guys

If you need any help creating that boot disk i will help you do it, i could make one for you but that way you wouldn't know how to do so in the future and the whole point of installing linux for the first time is learning how to do it. IMO.

But if you want and need it i will walk you through the steps.

Absolutely. I can do whatever I need on Windows. The whole idea is to learn Linux. If I get stuck I'll holler. The worst part of Linux as in any new technology is learning the new jargon.

I attempted d'ling the DVD image for Core 2 onto my HD (NTFS). The downloads load and show only 72Megs even though they SHOULD be 4 GB. Tried this at official Fedora site as well at a mirror (rsync://ftp.ndlug.nd.edu/fedora-linux-core) with the same result, so I am loading the 4 CDs. I loaded the first and will load the remainder when I have the time. Nonetheless, I am quite curious why the DVD images do not seem to be the proper size when I dl them. I'm sure there is a simple answer. Does anyone know?
