Linux Distribution for underpowered systems

Hi,

What would be the best linux distribution for an old 486SLC2 with 16MB RAM & 300MB HD space?

I'm thinking of dedicate this box to compile and learn MySQL. So far I tried to install RH 7.2, but it wouldn't let me b/c it require more RAM.

TIA

You're probably looking at somthing like slackware or debian. They are probably the two mainstream distros with the lowest system requirements. You can get either one of those working on any system.

I set up redhat 5.2 on a box like that. It is here, cpuinfo here.

newer distros generally require more ram. (and more hard drive space).

I have a lot of 30-pin SIMMs, pm me if you have spare slots and want some ram 🙂
