Hey, I was thinking of messing around with Linux during winter break. I know that D2OL crunches a lot faster in Linux and I was wondering if there are any marked improvements for other projects such as DF or SETI? Thanks!
Do you feel Linux is faster because it is a better constructed OS, or because it just uses a lot less resources thus freeing up more ram? I would think the DC projects that require more ram will naturally perform better as a result if that is true. I believe thats why D2OL does so well with it. And perhaps even the Java applet is much more trimmed down by design.
yes, DF under linux vs windows is faster . how much you ask? well it has been quite a while since i did/saw benchmarks, but it was about 10-20% back at the beginning of the project (the intel compiled version is about 5-10% faster than the gcc version as well)
when i get some free time , say in march
, i am going to do a grunch of benchmarks with the different OS's (windows, linux, freebsd as minimums) on the same hardware so that we can quantify questions like this. and compare the use of the various switches to quantify the margin of improvement when using the -rt and -qt switches
also, if you need a resource to get started with linux, LinuxIso.org is a great place to download distributions and has instructions to help you burn your own linux cd's
I think its has more to do with the port and the OS than the OS. i.e. SETI on Linux is equal or sometimes slower for some reason than winnt-cmd.i386, and the Solaris port is really bad where as the SGI is very fast. With D2OL I imagine that the Solaris and Linux versions have more to do with the client porting than the OS itself.
