Linux Compatibility... (question for the linux users)

I haven't run Linux since 1996 and I'm considering switching over again but I have some concerns about compatibility with all my peripherals and equivilant apps. I have a USB flash card reader and a USB webcam that I need to be functional. Also I need equivilants of Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Sound Forge, Nero, Pagemaker/Indesign, and Illustrator.

Oh, and also a filesharing program would be nice... what's available for Linux?

Any help would be appreciated.

First of all, make the switch - the dark side is so much better once you're here!

USB is pretty good in Linux - check one of the many LHD's out there such as http://lhd.datapower.com

Photoshop, and Dreamweaver are programs that I have seen running under WINE - the place for Linux software is www.freshmeat.net

Filesharing is done with gtk-gnutella

A lot has changed since 1996, and I urge you to give it a try. Some of the applications you mentioned don't have an equivalent in Linux, or I just don't know of any. All I know of is Gimp for a replacement of Photoshop, but as Shak mentioned, some of the applications for Windows will run under Wine. As for USB, I've gotten my USB compact flash reader (Sandisk) working under Linux, haven't tried a webcam but I believe there is support for them.

Good luck to you, you should give partitioning a try, that way if its not what you want you can easily go back to your old setup.

StarOffice has an Access substitute - that's one of the few things the non-free StarOffice has over the free OpenOffice. Don't know if it reads Access files or not, but I would guess it probably does.

Well..if your looking for some encouragement...

... My USB Compact Flash card reader, my IBM USB Webcam, my USB Lexmark Printer, and my USB Connection to my Cannon video camera... all work out of the box with zero configuration.
