I've run up against a pretty specific Linux hardware compatibility issue, and don't know where to go with it. Anyone either got the answer or a tip about what forum or site to go to??

Trying to install Red Hat 6.2, which came on a CD in the back of a textbook for my networking course next term (got it early so I could take a look before the term begins). Did the partitioning thing for the dual boot, did the install, got the message that there were no valid devices found for the filesystem. I can't find what I did wrong, and I posted on the OS board yesterdayu, and one of the replies suggested that 6.2 might not be able to recognize my HD controllers. It's a beautiful new machine custom built at a local shop, Athlon TBird 900, ABIT KT7RAID, 256 RAM, 2 IBM DeskStar 75GXP 30GB drives. The reply suggested that 6.2 can't recognize the RAID controllers, maybe version 7.0 is needed??

So it's a pretty specific question -- is that the problem? If it is, then the game is over, and it's off to the store tomorrow for 7.0.

How can I find out, without spending another $30 to try 7.0?

The Red Hat site has a Compatibility List, which leaves a lot to be desired. It just doesn't give me any answer that I can make sense of.

A friend who programs on a Linux machine (not dual boot) suggested comp.os.linux at Deja.com. I went there and struggled for a long time with getting registered and logging in, sent my message, and got the error message that there was no valid newsgroup at "comp.os.linux" What???? Maddening!!!

Anyway, I'm at my wits' end here, and hoping someone can point the way for me.

Thanks a lot!

These URL's are from Mandrake, but they're specific to the kernel, not the distribution.

You should also check out the (mini)-howto's the LDP project has. A good starting point is here : http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/os.html#OSRAID

As for the general solution to your problem : you'll probably have to give the I/O parameters of your RAID controllor to LILO, in order to let it find the root file system. Alternativly, you can put the IDE-cable of the drive where your root mounting point (/) is, on the standard IDE-ports (the VIA IDE ports are detected autmomaticly).

And as for RH7.0 : don't buy it. It's a piece of crap. It has beta compilers and C libs that'll make all your custom compiled binaries incompatible with all other Linux distributions.

Welcome to the world of Linux by the way, where nothing works with a few clicks and a reboot ;)
