Ok, I know there's quite a few out there, but for general Linux sys admin, what would you recommend, and what should I stay away from?

I have my eye on the LPI test (Linux Professional Inst.) and my good friends at CompTIA's Linux+
(I alredy have A+ and CDIA)

RedHat's cert looks good too, but that is distro specific...

RHCE is the only one I know of that people actually kinda know, and is kinda respected.... for the most part unix certs aren't exactly looked good upon. People prefer experience to certs.

i have Linux+, sair LCP, and bout to be LCA .. and really they dont mean much at all ( heh i just take them for the hell of it) .. as previously stated probably the only one that is thought much of is RHCE, the knowledge base that it covers is not just redhat specific .. Sair isnt too bad .. certification in the Linux world just hasnt got on as much as in the MS world .. Linux+ was very easy if you just want to start with somethin .. good luck, hope this helps ..

SANS track 6. I hate certs. I think they are worthless. But they can help you get in the door.

RHCE... but its not easy... its an all day (8 hours) lab exam that someone who doesnt actually have a couple of years real-world experience wouldnt have a prayer of passing...

AND THAT IS probably why it actually gets some respect.

Certs are not very well respected in the *NIX world, because you can usually find out just how much a guy really knows in about 10 mins in an interview or if you hire them, their co-workers will know in about about 2 hours of working him him/her.

You can't "FAKE IT" in *NIX like you can in Windows, by just knowing which wizard to bring up and use the defaults or guessing.

your sig contains a url to an article about free software in which you have to pay money to read it. there's something very wrong with that :(
