Linux boot question

Do I still need to install linux in the beginning of the HD to be able to boot it ?
It's been awhile since ive install linux and I cant remember if it's still needed.

The newer versions of LILO do not require installation cynlinder <1024. Nor does GRUB. I think thats what you were asking.

yet the LILO documentation STILL claims the 1024 cylinder limit as of RH7

If I'm not mistaken I believe RH 7.0 was the last version to ship with the "old" LILO.
The new one definitely works past 1024. My boot partition doesn't start till about 2550 and I dual boot beautifully with Win2K and Mandrake 8.1 and 8.2.

no, 7.0 did work fine with >1024 the documentation just left that part out and didn't mention "lba". hence the rolleyes ;)
