Linux Boot CDs wont boot

So I just bought a Dell 700m for school in the fall and I was trying to get a copy of Whoppix or Knoppix STD to work. I downloaded both current versions and burned them and what not and when I start it up i go to the boot screen thing by pressing F12 and go to the CD-ROM choice, and i get a bunch of broadcom errors, if you need i'll post them. Is there something with dell computers that wont let me boot from cd or what?

thanks in advance

In your BIOS, you should be able to permanently set the machine to check for a bootable CD before booting from the hard drive. Also, it sounds like you're initiating a network boot from PXE instead of a CD boot.

yea thats what i was thinking
i went into the bios and after i changed/saved/restarted the list was like so
1: USB FDD:
2: IDE CDROM:SONY DVD +/-RW DW=D56A-(SM)
... and like 3 more

when i boot it goes directly to starting up windows
